ALS, off the Virginia capes, to Willing and Francis, 1798 June 24.

Account of the trial cruise of the U.S.S. Ganges, a merchant ship Dale had commanded on furlough and retained command of when it was purchased for the Navy. The ship was ordered to sail between the Virginia capes and Long Island to sink or capture French ships attacking American commerce. In this letter Dale records encounters with other ships between June 14 and 24, and his futile attempt to settle rumors that many armed French vessels are active off the coast.
